The school is smaller, and I feel like the students and the teachers really have a really close relationship, almost like a family. I really enjoyed that just because I get the chance to really get to know people and not just you know on the surface level, but I get to know them a little deeper, so I love that. What has been your favorite subject? I think my favorite subject right now would probably be English. Because I really enjoy writing, and even though it’s really difficult, our teacher really challenges us to do our best. I really enjoy it. It pushes me a little bit, but I really enjoy it. What has been the most challenging subject? English. What are you involved in at school? I am involved in athletics. I played football this year. I played basketball as well. I played on varsity for the past three years in football and four years in basketball. What do you like to do in your spare time? I also play guitar and lead worship for my youth group. So that takes up a lot of my time. I lead worship for chapel as well at our school. I do that, and I’m also in choir. I lead a small group at my church as well, on Sundays. What is something you’ve accomplished that you’re proud of? I got first-team all-district as a safety in football this year. That was kind of exciting, and I was kind of proud of that. I think maybe just SAT scores. I worked hard this year, and it kind of paid off. What is the most important lesson you’ve learned? It’s worth it to trust God in every circumstance, and no matter what life throws your way that God really is trustworthy and faithful.

Actually, I applied to Baylor, and I got accepted, so right now it looks like I am going to Baylor. I also applied at [The University of Oklahoma] in Norman, so there as well, but I think I’m pretty much Baylor-bound.

What are your plans for college? Actually, I applied to Baylor, and I got accepted, so right now it looks like I am going to Baylor. I also applied at [The University of Oklahoma] in Norman, so there as well, but I think I’m pretty much Baylor-bound. What will you study? I plan to become a PA, so my degree would be pre-health at Baylor, but a PA is physician’s assistant. They do everything a doctor does, but they don’t have to do all the years of schooling. It’s, like, six years instead of 11 or so. What did you want to be when you were younger? Actually, I always wanted to be a worship leader. I think, my dad being a pastor, I grew up around the church, and I always loved worshipping God. I always sung, and my dad taught me how to play guitar, so I always wanted to do that. I think it’s still something I want to do little bit, but I kind of wanted a more practical skill as well. That’s why I wanted to go the medical way. What is something most people don’t know about you? I’ve actually been to 16 different countries. I traveled with my dad around the world a lot, and I’ve been to places like Uganda and Sri Lanka and Haiti and Germany and places like that, so that’s kind of interesting. Growing up, what is something your mother always told you? I mentioned it earlier, but my mom always told me that God is always good in every circumstance, and he is worth trusting in. What is something you can’t live without? I don’t think I could live without a solid family around me. I think that is the best thing to have — parents and siblings that really care for me. I think it would be really hard for me to live without that. What is one word that describes you? Passionate. Who is someone that inspires you? I’ve always been inspired by our worship leader at our church, James Mark Gulley. He is just a really solid guy that loves God and does what he does really well. I’ve always kind of wanted to be like him.

It’s a lot like real life. It’s not just a certain [type] of people there. It’s a good indicator or sample of what’s it’s going to be like after high school. What has been your favorite subject? Calculus, with Mr. Wilson. It’s hard, but he makes sure you understand everything. What has been the most challenging subject? Ms. Copas’ government class. What are you involved in at school? I’m in the mock trial program. I’m the lead attorney. I’m also in show choir, a capella choir and theater. Also the audio/visual productions club. What do you like to do in your spare time? During football season, we do the tailgating stuff. That’s a big thing at our school now. That’s been one of my major pastimes. It’s almost an extracurricular. Then, camping, being outside, stuff like that. [Chris was named Outstanding Youth in Philanthropy by the Association of Fundraising Professionals, Central Texas chapter for his many hours of community service.] What is something you’ve accomplished that you’re proud of? I just got my Eagle Scout this summer. That’s something I’m really proud of. I think it sets me out, compared to other people, as a leader and just with the different skills you learn. What is the most important lesson you’ve learned? Lead by example. We do that a lot in Boy Scouts. You’re not going to get anything done unless you get in there and get down and dirty with everyone else. What are your plans for college? I’m looking at a mechanical engineering degree. I’ll probably go to Texas A&M in College Station, or I’m also looking at [Southern Methodist University] and Tulsa University. I want to go to law school and work with patent law, or, I guess, just try to help other people take their ideas and make them reality. What did you want to be when you were younger? I always wanted to do something with building stuff. I really liked Legos as a kid and doing drawings of buildings. Growing up, what is something your mother always told you? Clean my room. What is one word that describes you? Leader. Who is someone that inspires you? My neighbor, Riley Woods. A couple years ago, he got in a skiing accident, and he just reminds to live my life the way that I should. Using my gifts to the best of my abilities. What will you miss about Waco when you go off to college? I’m going to miss Dubl-R a lot. They have really good burgers.

I play snare drum. I am president of student council. I’m also president of [National Honor Society]. I’m involved in chess club and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. What do you like to do in your spare time? I love to hunt. I like to volunteer when I can with church and stuff. There is this camp, the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards camp, and I was chosen to attend my junior [year], and then I was selected to be a counselor this pass summer. It’s just a leadership camp. I’m going this coming summer to be a counselor. What is something you’ve accomplished that you’re proud of? I earned my black belt in taekwondo in sixth grade. What is the most important lesson you’ve learned? Treat all people with compassion and just treat all people equally, no matter what. This is where I’ve grown up. I’ll miss the people I’ve grown up knowing.

Along those lines, all the sciences and math. What has been the most challenging subject? Probably calculus. Just a lot of formulas, memorization. It’s been good. It’s been fun. What are you involved in at school? I’m president of [Fellowship of Christian Athletes] and [National Honor Society]. I run cross-country and track. I play golf. I’m on UIL teams for academic stuff. I’m on the robotics team. Kind of, whatever they’ll let me do I try to do. What do you like to do in your spare time? I like to run a lot. I read. I’m involved in my church youth choir. For the most part, what I do is school-related. Just kind of regular stuff, I guess. What is something you’ve accomplished that you’re proud of? This year I’m a National Merit Semi-Finalist. What is the most important lesson you’ve learned? Moving a lot, I’m a natural introvert. In the past couple towns we’ve lived in, I’ve learned people are people. They’re only people, and we’re really all in it together. It’s been kind of neat to recognize humanity for what it is — humanity. It’s been neat to learn how to open up to people. It’s been good.

What are your plans for college? I want to major in biomedical engineering. I’m still looking at colleges right now. I’m looking at Duke, Vanderbilt, Rice and A&M. I don’t know where that will take me. What do you want to do after college? I’m still kind of looking into all the things I can go into with that. Right now, I’m kind of interested in all the aspects of designing prosthetics and stuff like that. I think that’s incredible. I like more the mechanical aspects. What is something most people don’t know about you? I can rap every single word to ‘Super Bass’ by Nicki Minaj. What is one word that describes you? Eager. Who is someone that inspires you? One of the people who inspires me most is my grandfather. He is an old basketball coach and teacher. Now he works at Texas Baptist Men’s Disaster Relief program; he’s a chef. What will you miss about Waco when you go off to college? I really like how it’s a strong, diverse community, as far as the pride everybody seems to take in Baylor and even MCC. Everything. The local aspects. Being interested in science and stuff, I like the strength or the privilege of programs like SpaceX and L3. It’s like a quiet town, but it’s a town where things are happening. I really like that about it.

On attending Crawford: I like the fact that it’s a small school. You know everybody pretty much. I like the fact that as far as sports go, you see a lot more action than you would going to a bigger school. What has been your favorite subject? Geometry. What has been the most challenging subject? Physics. What are you involved in at school? I played football. I’m going to run track in the spring. I tried out for one-act play today, so I’m not sure if I’m going to make that or not. I’m part of the beta club. I’m in [Peer-Assistance Leadership]. I’m in the [Fellowship of Christian Athletes]. What do you like to do in your spare time? At my church, I’m part of the student leadership team, which is basically the seniors and juniors of our youth group. I work for my grandparents a lot. They own a bed and breakfast. I do a lot of manual labor, like outside stuff. What is something you’ve accomplished that you’re proud of? Right now, just being valedictorian. I was able to transition from being homeschooled into public school. It’s not that hard, but I just didn’t think I was going to be able to do it. What is the most important lesson you’ve learned? No matter what people think of you, just be yourself. Just be yourself, and people will respect you for that. What are your plans for college? I’ve been accepted by Texas A&M. I’m going to study kinesiology and be in the Corps of Cadets. It’s a big deal at A&M.

What do you want to do after college? After, I might join the Navy. I kind of want to be a coach/teacher or a physical therapist. What did you want to be when you were younger? A firefighter or police officer or an NFL player. Growing up, what is something your mother always told you? That I carry the family name. Don’t do anything that would embarrass our family. What’s something you can’t live without? My brotherhood at my church, our small group of senior guys. We just hang out all the time. Who is someone that inspires you? Someone I don’t know that inspires me is Tim Tebow. What will you miss about Waco when you go off to college? All the restaurants. Also, most of my friends in the brotherhood will be going to Baylor, so I’ll be leaving them behind.

I’m also in [National Honor Society] and choir, theater. I don’t remember what else. What do you like to do in your spare time? I take taekwondo, and I’m actually a black belt. I’ve been playing since I was 7. What is something you’ve accomplished that you’re proud of? Last year, our women’s choir went to state, and we got a first division score. I took chemistry honors with her, and she was the one who recommended that I take AP Chemistry, and at first I didn’t really want to do it because it sounded like a lot of work, but when I took it, it was worth it. The hard work was probably the best part. What will you miss about Waco when you go off to college? Probably the people, my friends and my dog, Maggie. I like that I can get to know everyone. All my friends, we’re all really close. I like the education style. What has been your favorite subject? That’s really hard. I really like my calculus class, and I also really like science. So I guess biology, even though I’m not taking that this year. What has been the most challenging subject? Probably chemistry. I hate chemistry. I took that this year, so that’s really hard. What are you involved in at school? I’m the treasurer of the student government association. I’m also on the cross-country team, although that’s ended. I’m on the yearbook staff. What do you like to do in your spare time? I love to read, and I really enjoy playing the piano. And, yeah, I like to read a lot. I especially like — I know its kind of nerdy — but epic poetry. I really enjoy that, too. What is something you’ve accomplished that you’re proud of? By the end of the year at our school, each of the seniors will have written a senior thesis, which is kind of a big deal. We’ll have to defend that before a panel of advisors, so that’s something that I’m proud of. I’m also proud that our cross-country team got first in state. What is the most important lesson you’ve learned? Not to be afraid to ask for help and that you can’t improve unless you’ve sought counsel from other wiser people.

I’m looking at Trinity University down in San Antonio, I’m looking at Baylor University, and I’m looking at Ouachita Baptist University.

What are your plans for college? I’m looking at Trinity University down in San Antonio, I’m looking at Baylor University, and I’m looking at Ouachita Baptist University. What did you want to be when you were younger? Up until last year, I guess I always wanted to be some kind of physician’s assistant or somewhere in the medical field, but I’m not positive now that’s it’s time, actually, to make the decision. What is something a lot of people don’t know about you? I have a twin sister named Lauren, and she is about six inches shorter than I am, and she is two minutes older, which is very ironic. Growing up, what is something your mother always told you? She always tells me that she prays that I’ll be someone who follows after the Lord and that I’d be a godly person. She tells me that often. What is something you can’t live without? Besides God, probably running. I really like to run. What is one word that describes you? Disciplined. Who is someone that inspires you? Probably my science teacher, Ms. Katherine Pitts. She is a really great woman.

It has more of a family environment because it’s a small school, and the classes are small. Teachers are able to establish a really close relationship with the students. It’s a science school. What has been your favorite subject? Physics. What has been the most challenging subject? Calculus. What are you involved in at school? We have student council, and I’m a member of the senior advisory board. We have a lot of robotics teams, so not only am I the captain, but I also tutor the younger teams, elementary school and middle school students. What do you like to do in your spare time? When I went to Turkey, I discovered my talent of photography. I recently bought a new camera and started taking pictures. I participated in an MCC photography contest, and I was featured in a magazine. What is something you’ve accomplished that you’re proud of? Overcoming challenges. When I came to this country, I had limited English knowledge. I tried to overcome all those challenges and never make excuses for myself. That’s the biggest accomplishment. Overcoming those challenges and being the best I can be. How many languages do you speak? Five languages: Russian, Tatar, Turkish, Uzbek and English. I’m not fluent in all of them, but I have the knowledge. What is the most important lesson you’ve learned? Just the importance of education and trying to learn as much as possible. I think that will make you a better person.

What are your plans for college? I plan to study computer science or computer engineering. I applied to M.I.T. That’s my first choice, and I applied early admission. What did you want to be when you were younger? An engineer. What is something you can’t live without? Music. It helps me relax and concentrate. What is one word that describes you? Driven. I’m driven to always improve myself and find areas where I’m weak, but I can challenge myself in new areas. Who is someone that inspires you? Before Steve Jobs died, I never paid that much attention to him. I just thought he was a successful man, but once he died, all his human qualities came out. People talked about his importance and how he didn’t let anyone else drown out his inner voice. He was driven to make a difference in the world, and he never let anyone challenge that. Once I learned that about him, that changed it for me.

You get to know everybody and all the teachers. And everybody’s pretty much friends, and you see the same people a lot. What has been your favorite subject? Probably chemistry. What has been the most challenging subject? Probably AP European history. What are you involved in at school? In school, I’m in [National Honor Society], Mu Alpha Theta, chemistry and Spanish clubs, and I’m the basketball manager. I was in TAPPS academic last year. What do you like to do in your spare time? I’m an Eagle Scout in Troop 308. Over the summer, I researched at CASPER [Center for Astrophysics, Space Physics & Engineering Research], which is at Baylor. Just hang out with friends, watch a lot of basketball and play different sports and go to Baylor games. What is something you’ve accomplished that you’re proud of? Probably being an Eagle Scout at Troop 308. I plan on doing biomedical engineering. What will you do with your degree? I’m not really sure yet. Probably go to medical school for further studies. What did you want to be when you were younger? I always wanted to be a doctor or a surgeon, in particular. What is something most people don’t know about you? I like to go skiing a lot, but I three-track ski because I’m an amputee, and I can’t use my left leg. So that’s different, and I guess not many people know. Growing up, what is something your mother always told you? Keep your options open. What is something you can’t live without? My computer, just because it gives me access to everything when I need it. Whatever I need to know. What is one word that describes you? Perseverant. That’s what I usually pick. I feel like it’s really important, and I’ve had to learn to be perseverant with various obstacles. Who is someone that inspires you? Jim Valvano. He was the basketball coach at NC State. Probably a lot of people don’t know who he is. He was the college basketball coach at NC State and had cancer. Before he died, he established a cancer fund and donated a lot of money to it. What will you miss about Waco when you go off to college? Family and friends that I made here and that I’ve grown up with and everything.

On attending Parkview: The class size is smaller. Your class literally becomes like a family to you. It’s a great Christian environment where we get to talk about Jesus on a daily basis. What has been your favorite subject? My favorite class would have to be Bible class. What has been the most challenging subject? Government and economics. What are you involved in at school? I’m captain of the cheerleading squad. I am captain of the volleyball team. I’m part of student council. I’m involved in track, National Honor Society and choir.
What do you like to do in your spare time? I love hanging out with friends, shopping. I’m super involved in my youth group at Antioch Community Church. What is something you’ve accomplished that you’re proud of? This year, my volleyball team won the state championship for our division. You have to learn teamwork. I had to learn how to lead and really work with people that are different, learn to persevere and not give up. What is the most important lesson you’ve learned? Teachers really are there to help you. They want you to be successful, and they’re on your side whether you realize it or not. Just learn to be respectful to teachers and listen to them.

What are your plans for college? I’m deciding between Dallas Baptist University and [University of Mary Hardin-Baylor]. I plan to major in business, specifically, marketing. What did you want to be when you were younger? I probably wanted to be a businesswoman. I was always making things to sell, starting new businesses and looking for ways to make money. I had lemonade stands. I sold cookies to people at my church. I made homemade potholders. I would weave them myself and sell them to friends. What is something most people don’t know about you? When I was little for about two years, I had to wear an eyepatch. One of my eyes was underdeveloped, and they had to develop the weaker eye. I was like a pirate. Growing up, what is something your mother always told you? To work hard, not give up and always do your best. What is something you can’t live without? Dr Pepper. What is one word that describes you? Random. Who is someone that inspires you? My Aunt Jana. She has been through quite a lot of obstacles in her life, but she continues to follow Jesus.

Some people have low expectations of our school, and it’s nice when we overcome them, like when the [boys’] soccer team made the [regional] playoffs and were district champions. The old building was close to the neighborhood and part of our community. I’m grateful for the new building. Who else has a new school? The new building is beautiful, but of course, I love the old school because of the memories. What has been your favorite subject? I understand math better than anything. It’s my third language. It’s really easy to understand, and I love doing it. Just putting it together and getting the answer: ‘Ah, yeah, I got it.’ What has been the most challenging subject? Physics. I had a good teacher, but it was gibberish. What are you involved in at school? I’m in varsity soccer, varsity cross-country. I’m in color guard for marching band. I was in mariachi band for two years. I’m a safe school ambassador. I’m in the key club, and I’m treasurer for the key club. I’m in the art club, and I’m in track. What do you like to do in your spare time? I like to read. My favorite book is ‘Pride and Prejudice.’ I like to play the guitar. I like to write music. I’m really outdoorsy. I like soccer, biking, especially riding everywhere around Waco. I like shopping, of course. I’m a woman. Just normal teenage stuff. Hanging out with friends and family. What is something you’ve accomplished that you’re proud of? Being number one [in my class ranking]. I found out junior year, and it was an amazing feeling. I’m doing something. I’m accomplishing something. All my hard work is paying off. What is the most important lesson you’ve learned? Hard work pays off. If I put my mind to it, I can do it. I have determination.

I want to be a high school math teacher. What did you want to be when you were younger? A teacher. It’s what I’ve always wanted to be. Growing up, what is something your mother always told you? To finish school. Always help others. She always helps others and doesn’t get anything back, and she has no problem with it. She’s just ready to help others. That’s something I like about her. Always be kind to others. She’s always kind. That’s what I’ve learned from her. What’s something that you can’t live with out? My best friend, Edgar. What is one word that describes you? Determined.

The teachers will work with you. You can go to them for anything. What has been your favorite subject? My favorite subject by far is English/Literature. What has been the most challenging subject? AP Calculus. What are you involved in at school? I’m a cheerleader. [I’m] in [National Honor Society], [student council], Diamond Darlings and the [Peer-Assistance Leadership] program, and I do volunteer work outside of school for that. In the past, I’ve been in Spanish club and FCCLA, Future Community Career Leaders of America. What do you like to do in your spare time? I teach Sunday school at my church, Austin Avenue United Methodist. I have a job. I work at Old Navy. I enjoy hanging out with my family, with friends when there’s time. What is something you’ve accomplished that you’re proud of? My proudest moment will hopefully be on graduation day. I am dying to be valedictorian. I work towards it every day. If that happens, that will definitely be my proudest moment. What is the most important lesson you’ve learned? If you set your mind to it, you really can do it. Going into my freshman year, I wasn’t in the top 10, I don’t think. I went to my brother’s graduation, and I heard the valedictorian give his speech. I just thought to myself, ‘I would love to do that.’ One of the greatest lessons is time management and taking a bigger goal and breaking it down into smaller goals that you can do each day.

Growing up, what is something your mother always told you? Remember whose daughter you are. Any time I leave the house, that’s what I hear. What’s something you can’t live without? Probably my mom. There’s a certain point where the schoolwork does get to me or the stress. She’s kind of always the one that says, ‘You need to relax. Put things in perspective. Go out. Have a good time.’ What is one word that describes you? Dedicated. Who is someone that inspires you? My junior English teacher, Ms. Vanvalkenburg. We call her Ms. V. I don’t think people understand what teachers do on a daily basis to help us. High school kids aren’t the funnest in the world to be around when you’re a teacher, especially seniors because we just don’t want anything to do with it. I think it takes a very special person to do what teachers do.

On attending Bosqueville: I like Bosqueville because it’s a small school. So I know everyone, and everyone knows me. And you get a lot of hands-on help from your teachers. What has been your favorite subject? I enjoy English. What has been the most challenging subject? Probably math. What are you involved in at school? In the past, I’ve been involved in athletics, like basketball, volleyball, track, softball. But now I’m a leader of the Bosqueville Outreach Program, which is a volunteer program at Bosqueville, and I’m a member of the [National Honor Society] and student council. What do you like to do in your spare time? I spend a lot of time with my family and continue volunteering. I really like to volunteer. What is something you’ve accomplished that you’re proud of? I was born with a foot condition, so it made athletics really hard.
What are your plans for college? I would like to become an occupational therapist. I haven’t decided on a school yet. I really felt prepared for the [AP] exam. What are you involved in at school? I’m in Meistersingers, which is the varsity choir at our school. Also, I’m on the UIL academic team. I also do Link Crew, which is the freshman orientation group where you have a group of juniors and seniors and we serve as mentors to freshman throughout the year. I also am in National Honor Society. [Natalie is Midway’s lone National Merit Semi-Finalist for 2011.] What do you like to do in your spare time? I spend a lot of time doing music. I’ve played piano for eight years, and I recently started doing pipe organ, so I spend a lot of time doing that. What is something you’ve accomplished that you’re proud of? I guess finishing up the classes, AP classes. What is the most important lesson you’ve learned? Just having the whole big picture of the fun and the stress and how you deal with that. I think that’s one of the things I can take away from high school.

What are your plans for college? I am actually waiting to hear from my top choice, which is Princeton. If I get in, I plan to go to Princeton and then major in philosophy. What did you want to be when you were younger? A teacher. My mom is a teacher, too, so that’s kind of what I thought I would do, and it hasn’t changed much since then. What is something most people don’t know about you? I actually don’t have a television in my house. Growing up, what is something your mother always told you? Keep focus. Keep God number one and your goals number two and kind of go from there. What’s something you can’t live without? Either my piano or my cellphone. What is one word that describes you? Dedicated. Who is someone that inspires you? My old piano teacher, Mr. Edwards. I’ve kept up with him since I was in third grade, and he recently passed away from brain cancer. What will you miss about Waco when you go off to college? For one thing, the heat. It’s very cold up there.
